Curriculum Development Staff and Contributors


 


Lorraine Butler, R.N., B.S.N., MBA
Project Steering Committee

Lorraine is Assistant Director of Nursing at The Caroline Kline Galland Home in Seattle, Washington. She has specialized in geriatric care, both Long Term Care and Assisted Living for the past 7 years. Persons with Parkinson's disease need to be cared for by care givers with the special understanding and skills required. She is thrilled to know that this project will make a difference in the lives of the persons with Parkinson's disease and the people providing this specialized care.

 


Bonnie Brian-Caldwell R.N., B.S.N., M.S.N., L.N.H.A., O.N.C.
Clinical Training Specialist, Curriculum Development Team

Bonnie has worked as a registered nurse for more than 30 years with specialties in Rehabilitation and Geriatrics. She has been a Director of Nursing in a skilled nursing facility, Director of a home health agency, and Administrator of a hospital-based transitional care unit. Bonnie has been an instructor for the School of Nursing at the University of Washington and helped design the Alzheimer's Association's "Providing Dementia Care" curriculum. She is a DSHS certified trainer for the dementia curriculum as well as the caregiver training series. Bonnie operates Educoncepts through which she provides education and management consultation to assisted living communities and adult family homes. She is actively involved with the creation of a meaningful, competency based caregiver education program for Boarding Homes in the State of Washington.

 


Sierra Daniel, PA-C MS, Neurology
Certified Physician Assistant, Clinical Specialist, Curriculum Development Team, Project Software, Video and Graphic Design

Sierra is a certified Physician Assistant and member of the interdisciplinary team at the Booth Gardner Parkinson's Care Center at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Washington. She completed her medical training at State University of New York at Stony Brook earning her second Bachelor of Science degree. She obtained a Master's in Clinical Neurology from the University of Nebraska. She completed review for Deep Brain Stimulation programming from Stanford University Medical Center. Sierra also has a wide scope of medical training and experience in other highly specialized areas including cancer, psychiatry and emergency medicine. Prior to PA training, Sierra earned her first Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science and practiced as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist and instructor at the University of Louisville. In addition, at the University of Louisville, she served as co-director of a 3 year statewide distance learning project to include personally developing dual platform software and graphic design.

 


Monique L. Giroux, MD
Medical Director, Curriculum Development Team

Dr. Giroux received her medical degree from Ohio State University and completed her residency in Neurology at Yale University. Dr. Giroux then completed two fellowships at Emory University studying the surgical and medical treatment of Parkinson's disease and movement disorders under renowned specialists. She is currently the medical director of the Booth Gardner Parkinson's Care Center at Evergreen Hospital, Kirkland, Washington, leading a multidisciplinary team that provides specialty care for the region as well as outreach to many surrounding states. She has developed numerous multi-specialty programs focusing on improving quality of life for people living with Parkinson's disease. She has published numerous articles and book chapters on Parkinson's disease and currently provides continuing education for her physician colleagues enhancing the care of Parkinson's disease.

 


Susie Hepner, OTR/L
Occupational Therapist, Curriculum Development Team, Field Testing Coordinator

Susie has worked in healthcare for over 25 years, holding a variety of positions as a therapist, and also in healthcare management and product development. As an occupational therapist she developed her expertise in neurological conditions and rehabilitation. She has extensive training experience and is a guest faculty member at the University of Washington for both the rehabilitation and nursing departments.

 


Wendy Holman
Project Steering Committee

Wendy is employed in the Human Services Division for the City of Seattle and for many years cared for her mother who had Parkinson's disease. She continues to actively support family members who are caring for loved ones with Parkinson's disease through a local family support group.

 


Alisa Malloch, R.N.
Project Steering Committee

Alisa is supporting and caring for her mother who has lived with Parkinson's disease for more than 20 years. Recently she spent five years as the local head of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) at the University of Washington. She has been committed to providing specialty training for caregivers. Currently, Alisa is studying for a bachelor's degree in nursing.

 


Suzanne Pedersen, MSW
Project Manager, Curriculum Development Team

Suzanne has been responsible for developing community health programs serving the elderly and chronically ill for more than 20 years. Until recently she was Vice President of Continuing Care at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Washington where she was responsible for home health care, hospice, several case management programs and most recently the beginning development of the new Booth Gardiner Parkinson Care Center. Currently Suzanne is a health care consultant and project manager working with community based non-profit organizations on projects that make a meaningful difference in the quality of life and health of citizens in our communities.

 


Susan Walker M.A. CCC
Speech-Language Pathologist, Content Consultant

Susan graduated with BA and MA degrees in Communication Disorders and Speech Science at the University of Colorado, where her mentor was Dr. Lorraine Ramig, originator of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment for Parkinsonian speech. She completed her clinical fellowship year at Boulder Community Hospital, earning the Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. Susan has worked as a medical speech pathologist for 15 years, with emphasis on Parkinson's disease and traumatic brain injury.

 


Ann Zylstra, PT
Physical Therapist, Content Consultant

Ann is a Physical Therapist specializing in treatment of Parkinson's patients at the Booth Gardner Parkinson's Care Center at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1986. Prior to her professional training, she spent two years assisting in the Muscle Disease Clinic at the University of Utah Hospital. Her areas of specialty include gerontological orthopedics and neurology with emphasis on movement disorders.
